Herbert Sandberg
Politische Grafik

14.06–12.07.1981

Political Graphics. Sandberg is one of the most determined and courageous opponents of National Socialism. In 1934 the Nazis imprisoned him, and from 1938 until his liberation in 1945 he was in the Buchenwald concentration camp. Those pictures of him that refer to this dark time in Germany make up a large part of his work, the most moving one. Since then Sandberg never tires of fighting against old and new phenomena of fascism in the world with his pictures and to stand up for peace and international understanding. The magazine “Ulenspiegel”, which he published together with the writer Günther Weisenborn immediately after the end of the war, is testimony to this. His caricatures and drawings are also world-famous, among them the most beautiful of his works, which emerged from his work at Brecht’s Berliner Ensemble.
