  • Mattia Denisse: Double V – Mnemonic drawings: "They searched the fire and found the bird Mutúg. Makunaíma tied a long string to his tail" ==> Divine Story of Smoking, 2017

Nuno de Brito Rocha:
Who names things: Disambiguation in the work of Mattia Denisse

14.06, 7pm

There aren’t stories or journeys or dreams or conferences or books that are more real than the others; they are all worth documenting and announcing. The artist Mattia Denisse is a person in a constant play of search and find. He multiplies himself in his images and writings, fishing distant memories and bringing them to the present. He imagines in the present possible as well as certain futures, and travels in and out of his drawings. At the same ease as he portraits a series of real and unreal encounters, he shifts from language to language to tell a story that may or may not have happened. As dangerous as it is today, he dares himself to know no geographical borders and to name things his own way.

Nuno de Brito Rocha is a curator, art historian and educator living in Berlin. He is associate curator of Anozero’19 – the third Biennial of Contemporary Art in Coimbra, Portugal. His curatorial approach is transnational and lies significantly in dialogues, contemporary modes of exhibiting and Outreach. Currently, he is working at the Berlinische Galerie, Berlin’s Museum of Modern Art, is an educator at Gropius Bau and has worked at the Museu da Casa Brasileira in São Paulo. He holds a master’s degree in Art History from the Humboldt University of Berlin with the thesis “The Floating Museum, by Lynn Hershman Leeson”, and studied at the Universidade de São Paulo.
