Ambivalence characterizes the paintings of Sibylle Springer (*1975 in Münster, lives in Bremen and Berlin): they oscillate between abstraction and figuration, showing and concealing, beauty and horror, past and present, tradition and innovation. This is also the title of her solo exhibition at the GAK Gesellschaft für Aktuelle Kunst gift, as it contains the meaning of the “gift” as well as the toxic. A new series of works has been created for “gift”, dedicated to historical and contemporary depictions of violence, physical intimacy and other taboo areas. It finds its extension in a specially developed spatial concept in the GAK, which contrasts the paintings in form and content.
In the course of the artist talk, Sibylle Springer and Svea Kellner will discuss details of “gift”, the significance of secondary sounds and undertones for Springer’s work and relate the presented works to earlier approaches, themes and work cycles of the artist.
A conversation to the exhibition “Sibylle Springer. gift”.
