In 2016 the GAK hosted the first solo exhibition of the Danish artist Ib Geertsen (1919 – 2009) in Germany. This gave the GAK the opportunity to ask various workshops in the region whether they would be inspired by Geertsen’s geometric forms and clear colours and interpret them in their own designs.
The carpet designs of Célia Esteves’ label GUR move between Portuguese weaving tradition and contemporary motifs. They are often created in cooperation with other designers and/or freelance artists. In the sense of a resource-saving production, the carpets are made from leftovers from Portuguese textile factories. The small irregularities caused by the production on a traditional handloom give the carpets a unique character. All GUR carpets are machine washable (cold wash). Based on the colour and shape palette of Ib Geertsen’s paintings, Esteves designed a carpet motif in ten exclusive pieces with horizontal weaving blocks in shades of blue, accentuated by two diagonal elements and a narrow strip in yellow.
