Alice Gericke draws large-scale webs of lines with endless interwoven networks of relationships. Her annual edition is a landscape of papercuts in which she examines the components of a drawing, dissects them, takes distance and reassembles them. To do this, she first crumples up a sheet of paper, leaving irreversible marks on it. This dynamic moment of crumpling, which for many sheets of paper means their end, is a starting point for Gericke: she opens up the barely one-dimensional sheet and goes against the grain of finality. She then translates the fracture lines from one sheet of paper onto another by drawing, before finally revealing their structure through paper cut-outs that use different reference systems—some on, some around the line. Negative and positive proportions alternate in this minimal representation; sometimes the web teeters at the edge of what is possible, while at other points it seems very stable. Contrasting this fine papercut study of the line is the view through to the unsettled graphite powder, which Gericke collected as a waste product from previous drawing processes. Spread out across the surface, its shavings allow the landscape of lines to become all the more topographical.
Alice Gericke (b. 1991) studied fine arts at the Hochschule für Künste in Bremen and was subsequently a master student under Katrin von Maltzahn until 2022. She has had solo exhibitions at Galerie für Gegenwartskunst, Bremen (2020, 2022) and participated in group exhibitions at Weserburg Museum für moderne Kunst, Bremen (2021); PEAC Museum, Freiburg im Breisgau (2019); tête, Berlin; OQBO (Raum für Wort, Bild und Ton), Berlin (2018); and Galerie Flut, Bremen (2017).
