Daniel Behrendt’s work focuses on the representation of urban space and especially living space. His paintings and drawings show sections of house facades and reveal their small particularities: diagonal rows of windows, light reflexes on the fly screen or reflections in the window glass. Realität als Material was the title of a group exhibition in Wuppertal in which he participated. Indeed, in Behrendt’s work, a reality becomes a material that one faces every day without perceiving it. But to the same extent as his paintings reveal, something remains hidden: the interior of the rooms cannot be seen, the facade is impenetrable. In this way the pictorial space becomes a projection screen for the imagination of the viewer.
For the GAK, Behrendt has produced six paintings on paper showing fragments of buildings in light grey tones. The representation on fragile paper formulates an exciting contrast to the massiveness of the concrete buildings depicted.
